Definition of ECU tuning / chiptuning
Chiptuning is the electronic method of tuning a car, by intervening to the factory electronic control unit and tuning all the necessary parameters in order to implement a correct and reliable mapping for the mechanical subset of every vehicle.
How we work
There are 3 ways of working:
1. OBD reflash
With the OBD reflash, remapping is done using the OBD diagnostic port and chip reflashing!
2. BDM/Boot Mode
BDM/Boot mode, is the process followed to reflash the EMS outside the car, more commonly known as bench reflashing. This process is mainly used in remote upgrade cases (Bosch MED17/EDC17) in order to restore the EMS to OBD flashable condition.
3. Desoldering chiping
This process is used to old technology electronics that haven’t got the ability for OBD reflash or Boot mode. In this case the necessary chip is removed from the ECU, reprogrammed via chip programmer and put back to the ECU.
Revlimit offers 3 ECU tuning choices:
Aggressive tuning:
Using this setting, the maximum output of the engine is achieved regardless of the characteristics of each Car. Use of at least 100 octane fuel is needed.
Fuel choices:
1. filling station 100oct
2. 100oct + watermethanol injection
3. E85 Biofuel
4.LPG
5. Racing fuels
Switching of different fuel types can be done via the multimap control function, eg:
map 1: 100 okt
map 2: 100 okt + water/metanol
map 3: LPG/E85
map 4: Racing fuels
Eco Tuning
In that case, the lowest possible fuel consumption is achieved compared to the original Car. Output remains to the factory level.
Normal Tuning
Normal upgrades like stage1, stage2 etc are provided in this case. Fuel choices are: 95, 98, 100 octanes.
In the case of 95 octane fuel, fuel consumption remains to the factory level, whereas in 98/100 octane fuel, there is a noticeable drop to the consumption on conservative driving. Output is increased cause of the higher timing advance.
Also multimap control with different fuel types can be activated:

Revlimit has the capability to remap with four different ways:

Chiptuning Stages
Stage 1
No modifications to the engine or the peripherals are required.
- Stage 1 Software upgrade

Stage 2+
In this stage, some engine parts and peripherals will have to be replaced, except the
turbocharger which remains the same as before.
So we need:
- Stage 2+ Software upgrade
And some of the following upgrades:
- Bigger turbo
- Fuel Pump with more fuel supply
- Injectors with more fuel supply
- Pressure sensors (MAP sensor)
- Mass airflow sensor (MAF sensor)
- Wastegate
- Watermethanol

| UserSetable antilag-Launch Control |
User-Setable antilag Launch Control is an innovation of Revlimit for the VAG 2.0TFSi/TSi, 20VT, 2.7T & R32 and soon 1.4TSi/TFSi, 1.8TSi/TFSi as well as FIAT/Lancia/Alfa Romeo 1.4 T-Jet engines, that gives driver the capability to start from stand still with full boost. This function exists for manual and DSG gearbox.
The user setable function, gives driver the choice to change the Launch rpm via a combination of brake and clutch pedals for manual trasmission or via the Cruise Control switch for DSG transmission.
Launch Control comes into operation, only if clutch pedal is pressed for manual trasmission or brake pedal is hard pressed for DSG* trasmission. *As far as DSG trasmission is concerned, we disable the original Launch Control from TCU in order to have full control of antilag LC from engine ECU. How is it possible to have boost pressure without load? This is achieved with antilag function, that its main characteristic is ignition cut and timing retard. This results to ignition delay and transfer of combustion out of combustion chamber, into the exhaust monifold and directly to the turbo*. As a result, boost without load is achieved.
*Using antilag with timing retard has the advantage of fast spooling and high boost pressure but on the other hand, temperature in exhaust monifold and turbo are getting very high fast. This function is supposed to work with drag-racing engines since extensive use can cause damage to the exhaust monifold and turbo.
It is also notified that we are not responsible for any damage in the exhaust monifold or turbo when antilag is enabled.
| Multimap Switching 2.0TFSi, 20VT, 2.7T & R32 |
MapSwitching is an innovative feature found in our ECU programs, which is available for VAG 20vt, 2.0TFSi, 2.7T & R32 andsoon for VAG 1.4TSi/TFSi & 1.8TSi/TFSi. With this feature, user has the capability to change ECU programs using Cruise Control or a combination of brake and acceleration pedals!
*Using the Cruise Control: The Cruise control switch acts as MapSwitching when car is moving with a speed of less than 10km/h and rpm is less than 1500. In any other case, meaning that the car is moving faster than 10km/h and the engine revs more than 1500rpm, cruise control swith functions as Cruise Control.
*Using acceleration + brake pedals: Changing ECU programs is done with a combination of acceleration and brake pedals. This system is suggested to cars that are not equipped with Cruise Control.
The EPC light or the rev counter show us the map that we are using, eg: -1000rpm->map1 -2000rpm->map2 -3000rpm->map3 -4000rpm->map4
How is it possible 4 different programms to exist in the factory ECU?
The binary file of the factory ECU is about 60-70% written. So there is about 30-40% of free space inside the flash memory. That is where we put the extra code with the rest of the 3 programs.

FlatShift
FlatShift (shift-cut) is a process in which driver has the capability to change gears keeping the throttle pedal pressed and using only the clutch pedal. During the Flatshift operation, ignition cut or timing retard is used for antilag purposes without risking getting damage of the trasmission. The standar tune for Flatshift is 200ms, whereas more skilled drivers will benefit with time lower than 200ms.
*FlatShift advantages – During gear change, turbo has possitive boost pressure – Protection of syncs during fast and ”hard” changes – Benefit of several ms during 0-400 times – Via antilag-FlatShift turbo is always on boost
Knock Warning
Knock Warning is another innovation of Revilimit which has to do with Protection of the engine from knocking and notifing the driver when the engine is knocking. The driver is notified by the Check engine light (MIL) which flashes when ECU diognoses High timing retard via the knock sensor. More specifically, knock warning is set by default at -9 degrees. This means that when MB020 (Measuring Block 020) sees correction of 9 degrees in timing advance in at least one cylinder, then MIL light flashes with a frequency of 5Hz. In that case we should stop pressing the throttle, since the engine is at critical situation. We should also find the reason why this happened.

Shiftlight
The widely known shiftlight, which warns the driver when he should change gear, is tuned to work with the factory ECU, using the EPC light at the preferred rpm. The light can either flash or stay on. |
